Annie, when you gave a communication workshop for my staff, one thing that helped me was the idea of  "needing a pause". In fact, I have used that phrase to help me stop and think before making a comment or decision in the hectic day-to-day operations of the unit.  I have been able to consider whether I really need to comment on something or not, before jumping in with a statement I may not be able to back up.

Annie, It was so great to have you at two of my leadership meetings last week - very refreshing. The meetings were so productive, I couldn't help but think that you should be at all of our meetings!  When you told my colleague that you could feel her tightening up and asked her if something was bothering her, it helped her talk about what was bothering her. Instead of her sitting there all clammed up, (that's how it usually goes), you made her feel like she could speak her mind and in turn let the rest of us know what was bothering her. I've never seen anyone talk to her the way you did and I'm actually surprised that instead of saying, 'Oh, nothing's wrong.', she told us what was bothering her.  That made the meeting so much more productive!
